A Short History of BoatsMost people have usually travelled on a boat at some point in their lives. Some people do it on a daily basis because they are a fisherman and others do it when they go on exotic cruises. Boats in a sense are a lot like automobiles because they come in many different shapes and sizes. Boats have had radical changes over the past several hundred years. At one point boats were made solely out of wood and were only able to move off of manual power. This meant that boats normally had to be occupied with several hundred rowers per boat just to get it to move. The addition of sails helped take some of the stress off of rowers but they were still needed none the less. A boat in the sea is kind of like a fish in a water tank . There is a lot of room to explore but you are constricted to the boundaries of the sea. This was not really a problem until after the industrial revolution when boats started running off of steam power and oil. Now boats are massive structures that are capable of being self sustaining. Some cruise ships are able to support hundreds of people and stay at sea for many weeks. In a sense some boats are almost like small towns. |
